Winter is coming (quite literally) and Harvey MedSoc is happy to bring on some warm evenings and deeds. Our traditional Sweater Fest is not only a great evening with music and dancing, but also a charity event; the entrance fee is 1 euro and any piece of warm clothing - a coat, a scarf, gloves, sweaters or anything else you don't wear anymore and could be of use by somebody else. Everything will later be collected by the charity organisation Caritas and distributed to those in need in Pavia. Empathy and Compassion in Clinical Care

We are back on track with our series of bioethical talks and we’re proud to welcome to Pavia, another world-renowned ethicist: professor Debjani Mukherjee, from Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago.Professor Mukherjee, PhD, is going to deal with the ethical aspects of physical and mental rehabilitation. Each of us might have already encountered the dramatically devastating conditions of physical or mental impairment in elderly people and, in general, have experienced how demanding it can be to give care to those who are in their frailest moments as mortal beings. Doctors deal with such aspects of the human condition every day and professor Mukherjee is going to help us find our way in this complex field. Save the date and get ready for an emotionally intense talk.“Our ultimate goal, after all, is not a good death but a good life to the very end.” Atul Gawande, Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End Event

Narrative Ethics and Patient’s Experience in Health Care

It is with great pleasure that we announce that another marvellous seminar will enrich the first weeks of this new Academic Year. On October 11th at 5 p.m. we will have the privilege to meet Martha Montello, from Harvard Medical School, at the Almo Collegio Borromeo. She is a great bioethicist and philosopher; this seminar gives us the opportunity to meet one of the minds that are currently shaping our society. We believe in the power of sharing ideas in order to grow and thrive, as doctors-to-be and as human being. Professor Montello will speak about Narrative Ethics and the Patient’s experience in Health Care. In a time of powerful diagnostic algorithms and personalized medicine with a strong genetic approach, we tend to forget the importance of direct, human contact between the patients and their doctors. Professor Montello is going to be here to remind us not to do so, because every patient has a story and it is our duty to understand it. Event

Stem Cell Therapies for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a terrible genetic condition that leads to muscle degeneration and early death, usually before the age of 30. Enormous efforts have been made by researchers in order to understand how to tackle this enormous burden and we are proud to announce that we will soon have here in Pavia one of the leading scientist in this field: Giulio Cossu from the University of Manchester. On the 4th of October, thanks to Prof. Roberto Bottinelli we will be hosting Prof. Cossu who will be speaking about the latest results in the field of Regenerative Medicine and, specifically, about the use of Stem Cells in the treatment of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Be ready to give a glance to the future of medicine: a future in which, thanks to the work done by giants of science like Prof. Cossu, terrible conditions like DMD can be tackled and new hope can be given to patients. Who is Giulio Cossu? Giulio Cossu is recognized for his pioneering work on skeletal myogenesis and for the first cell therapy trial with stem cells for muscular dystrophy. Giulio Cossu received his MD degree from the University of Rome in 1997. He trained as a Fogarty post-doctoral at the Wistar Institute, University of Pennsylvania (1980-83), and then became Associate Professor at the Dept. of Histology and Medical Embryology of the University of Rome "La Sapienza". In 1991 GC was promoted full Professor and in 1993-4 was a visiting professor at the Pasteur Institute in Paris. In 2000 he was appointed Director of the “Stem Cell Research Institute” of the Hospital San Raffaele in Milan. In 2003 he was appointed as Scientific Coordinator of the newly created San Raffaele Biomedical Science Park of Rome, while maintaining is position in Milan. Since 2005 he is Professor of Histology and Embryology at the University of Milan. In 2008, he was appointed Director of the newly created San Raffaele Division of Regenerative Medicine.
